FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Response to Governor Cuomo’s 2014 State of the State

Response to Governor Cuomo’s 2014 State of the State

Statement from Tom Stebbins, Executive Director of the Lawsuit Reform Alliance of New York

“If Governor Cuomo wants to achieve his goals of universal pre-K, infrastructure improvements and the construction of new affordable housing, without raising taxes, he should take aim at reforming the state’s antiquated Scaffold Law. The New York City School Construction Authority recently estimated that it will spend hundreds of millions on Scaffold Law-related costs over the next three years, and hundreds of millions more taxpayer dollars are wasted across the state thanks to this burdensome and ineffective law. Scaffold Law reform would similarly support the Governor’s commitment to rebuilding after Sandy and Irene by directing money currently spent on lawsuits towards actual construction– and creating good paying jobs for those that will help us rebuild.”
