FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Lawsuit Reform Group Sends Letter Detailing Legal Fixes to NYC Mayor de Blasio

Today, the Lawsuit Reform Alliance of New York (LRANY), a New York-based tort reform group, sent a detailed letter to NYC mayor Bill de Blasio highlighting legal reforms that could free up taxpayer money for the new mayor’s stated priorities, including universal pre-K, affordable housing, and stopping the spate of hospital closures.

The letter points out that New York City taxpayers paid out $736.6 million for legal claims and judgments in 2013, the highest in over a decade. “This is greater than the budget for parks and libraries combined, and represents millions of wasted taxpayer dollars that would be better used in countless other ways,” said Tom Stebbins, LRANY Executive Director.

The group blames state laws for driving this excessive litigation, including the New-York-only ‘Scaffold Law,’ joint and several liability, and the state’s deficient standards of evidence.
